ITER: the trap

A very interesting article from naturenews. European Nations are trying fo find a source of funding for ITER after the announcement of costs overruns. A new council is planned end July to present the solution. And a solution, the EU is about to find one, a nasty one:

“European nations hope to divert more than a billion euros that were earmarked for research grants to make up a budget shortfall at the experimental ITER fusion reactor”

Nature says.

It would imply great damages to other sectors of the european research and would result in a calamitous image for the fusion project. Other searchers will resent this decision and it will end up in the isolation of fusion research, the worst thing that could happen.

Is it really the price to pay? Are we so sure of ITER’s success that we want it at any price?
